This number will be significantly higher in the near future, as Brazil prepares the construction of the Belo Monte dams in Rio Xingu. Several hundred endemic species of fish will be extinct as a result of this. Fishkeepers and enthusiasts across the globe are well aware of the diversity found in these rivers, but the issue is being neglected by the world community as a whole. The loss of the many unique species found there, not just fish but a vast number of lifeforms, will certainly be a mega disaster.
